Cumberland House or Saskatchewan Delta is located approximately 290 air miles north-north east of Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan. It is the oldest settlement in the province. Founded in 1774 when the Hudson's Bay Company, one of Canada's first fur trading companies, decided to establish its first inland trading post because the area was a prime producer of furs and game.
The area has numerous minor tributaries from the Saskatchewan River, surrounded by flood plains. This flat, water bogged terrain, with its reed-bound lakes and marshes are separated by tree covered levees or flood ridges, a natural haven for game. These comprise one of the most outstanding wetland wild life areas in North America. |
